March/April 2004                To all residents of the Summersdale Area

Dear Friends,

A number of you will be aware that I was elected Chairman of the SRA at the AGM in February and I write to outline the role of the SRA and its committee and encourage you to join the Association or renew your membership and perhaps become involved in its activities.

At the AGM I pointed out that whilst on some occasions the committee’s work is of a reactive nature,  I wished the Association to  take on a more positive and proactive role. Both aspects of our work are mentioned below but some very encouraging developments have taken place.

Summer Party, 26 June 2004

Following a visit by me and our Treasurer, Alan Deller, the Commanding Officer of the Roussillon Barracks, Colonel Paul Watton, kindly offered us the use of the barracks BBQ area and bar for our Summer party for the evening of Saturday 26 June from 7pm. There will be an opportunity to tour the barracks and see its facilities at first hand as well as meeting up with local residents and enjoying the food and drink on offer.  There will be a modest charge to cover expenses and the remainder will be put to the benefit of local charities. Full details will be available in the May newsletter but meanwhile book the date in your diary.

Bishop Otter College

Following a similar visit to meet the Principal of the College, Philip Robinson, to discuss a number of issues relating to the local area, we learnt that the facilities of the College are open to residents of the Summersdale district. This includes use of the library for which there would be a charge for membership depending on the extent of use. Certain people in the student category can join free of charge and details of this facility are available from the College Librarian. We hope to publish more information in the May newsletter regarding these offers.

Like the Barracks, the College officials have the interests of Summersdale at heart and are doing their best to minimise the impact of their communities on the local area. We discussed several issues such as the problem of obstruction in College Lane and parking on and off the premises.

SRA Action

The AGM was well attended and included representatives from City, District and County Councils as well as our local MP, Andrew Tyrie. A full report of the work of the SRA during the year was presented and if you would like to have a copy please contact me at the above address.

Topics tackled during the year included the South Downs National Park, the Graylingwell Development, Brandy Hole Lane, various traffic concerns, Community Support Officers, and a Vision for Chichester.

Representations were made to appropriate people on matters such as mail delivery, the One Stop Shop area, Graylingwell Cottages, and the  Water Company installation in Maplehurst Road.

We represent you on a number of local committees such as the Chichester Residents’ Association Co-Ordinating Group, the Goodwood Aerodrome Consultative Committee, the Goodwood Motor Circuit Consultative Committee and we have close contacts with the Chichester Society and the local Neighbourhood Watch groups.

We have a website at www.sra.1colony.com and our webmaster, Craig Rathbone, also monitors planning applications proposed for the Summersdale area in addition to keeping an eye on the wider development field in the district.
